Charlie Weis
Few coaches come with a pedigree as good as Charlie Weis. Not many people can sport the number of Super Bowl rings that he does having won two with the New England Patriots within the last decade and one with the New York Giants in 1990. Success is has undoubtedly been part of his career.
Born in Trenton, New Jersey on March 30, 1956, Charlie Weiss seemed destined for coaching greatness once he graduated from Notre Dame in 1978. After six years in the high school ranks at Benton and Morristown High Schools in New Jersey he began his first foray into college coaching at the University of South Carolina. After four seasons and earning his Masters degree in education he returned to the high school ranks as head coach at Franklin Township in New Jersey where he won a state title.
Charlie Weis’s pro career started off under the tutelage of Bill Parcells with the New York Giants. As the defensive coordinator and special teams coach for the Giants he assisted the team in winning the Super Bowl that season against the Buffalo Bills in a nail biter of a game 20-19. He followed Bill Parcells to the New England Patriots for the 1993 season as the team’s tight end coach. Over the next four seasons he coached the club’s tight ends, running backs, and wide receivers.
Weis left the Patriots after the end of the 1996 season to join Parcells with the New York Jets. For the jets he coached their wide receivers to success while making the calls as offensive coordinator. He held down the offensive reigns for the Jets until rejoining the New England Patriots for a run of success that would define his career.
Rejoining the Patriots as their offensive coordinator, Weis installed the Erhardt - Perkins offensive system, a style of play that utilizes the run to set up the pass. When long time quaterback Drew Bledsoe went down, he brought in 6th round draft pick Tom Brady to take over the position. Once again, Weis proved to be a tutor of greats as Tom Brady lead the team to win two of the next three Super Bowls.
Following the 2004 season Weis was able to do what many coaches dream of doing by returning to his alma matter to become its 28th head coach. Notre Dame was coming off a 6-5 season, one in which it had let go than coach Tyrone Willingham, and was looking to a graduate to return the school to its legendary status.
Charlie Weis is married with two children, Charles and Hannah. In 2003, he and his wife, Maura, formed the Hannah and Friends Foundation to assist children with developmental disorders.
