Charlie Weis Sucks!
Charlie Weis sucks is a refrain that is hear all too often in South Bend, IN, these days. After having record making success in his first two seasons, Weis and the Fighting Irish fell on hard times in the 2007 season.
The 2007 season saw the Irish near the bottom of most of the NCAA statistical categories. Of the 119 teams in Division I-A, Notre Dame was 119th in total offense, 119th in rushing offense with a whopping yards per attempt barely over a yard, 112th in passing offense, and 118th in scoring. Victories were only managed against such lowly football schools as Duke, Stanford, and UCLA. UCLA had to basically hand the game to the Irish by starting their third string, walk on quarterback. Even then, Notre Dame only managed a paltry 140 yards of total offense, but with the help of 7 turnovers they somehow won. The Midhsipmen of the U.S. Naval Academy broke a 43 game winning streak with a 46-44 triple overtime win.
If Charlie Weis sucks than how come he has three Super Bowl wins? First, the company he did it in must be considered. His first win was with coaching great Bill Parcells at the helm of the New York Giants. Weis had just joined the club that Parcells had built. The two with New England came as part of Bill Belichick’s staff, a manconsidered to be one of the greatest football minds of the modern era. As an offensive coordinator, his teams ranked in the lower half of the league in total offense. Since he left the patriots they have actually ranked better as an offense.
Champions are often given a bit more credit than they are due. Coming off a Super bowl win, Weis made a brilliant move in taking the head coaching job at one of the most storied college programs in the nation. At first, the hype even appeared to be true. Weis led the team to two ten win seasons and bowl games (and losses) his first two seasons.
However, with to recruiting classes under his belt the 2007 team would have more of his face on it than the prior two. Considering he had two of the best recruiting classes in the nation the last two years, it would stand to reason that Weis and the Irish were bound for glory. A year later and history shows them as having anything but glory.
Yet, amazingly, the guy still has his job. In fact, he managed a renegotiate his contract during the ’06 season. Weis has gone on record saying that he would only leave Notre Dame if fired or dead or dying. That really puts the onus on the university- do you want to admit you made a mistake and shorten his tenure or do you want to see if “Charlie Weis Sucks!” will become the rally cry of a disgruntled fan base?
